Pakistan's ISI and the Mumbai Terrorist Attacks

Fareed Zakaria interviewed retired general Hameed Gul on his weekly show GPS on December 7, 2008. Hameed Gul was the chief of Pakistan's infamous intelligence organization ISI, and is known as the creator of the Taliban. I think Fareed went easy on the general and didn't ask poignant questions that I would have in search of accountability for the Mumbai attacks.

I would have started with these seven questions:

  1. You are known as the creator of the Taliban. Why did you create them?
  2. What else has the ISI created (i.e. LET and other Jihadist organizations) that may have now become Pakistan’s Frankenstein.
  3. Why must Pakistan exert regional influence through these non-national actors, and deny national responsibility when things go wrong (Mumbai incident)?
  4. If ISI is the creator then shouldn’t it also be the dismantler of Taliban once they have outlived their usefulness?
  5. What are the conflicts within ISA (Jihadist vs. Secualar agendas), and what are the conflicts without (ISI running its own foreign policy) that create national and regional security quagmires?
  6. You defend ISI as a legitimate army institution and blame regional insurgencies, power struggles and terrorism on the “Zionist Agenda”. Would you see an Indian strike on Pakistan in the wake of the Mumbai attacks as part of this Zionist Agenda?
  7. You said you like Jews as they are close to Muslims in scriptures. Do you see an Israeli embassy in Islamabad anytime soon to further this love?
